The patter on the fabric is real tapistry and embroidery.
You can see similar fabric on commercial upholstery; ie; chairs and sofas in offices, restaurant, airports, and train stations.
I choose to use commercial upholstery fabrics for some of my clothing because it is very durable and can withstand lots of my bicycling in a wide varity of wet and nasty weather that we have here in Portland, Oregon.
I choose to make my own cycling shorts in response to the high prices and poor color and size choices of what I see in the stores.
To give you perspective, the fabric I used for these shorts was purchased in the remnents section of a fabric store here in Portland (Mill End Fabrics for you locals out there). For these shorts, I used probably less than $30 of fabric.
Commercial cycling shorts; even those with no color or artistic value; can cost up to close to $100.00 in the shops.
